Visual description

Cherry-blossom to cream pink throughout, deepening in the folds and paling to near-white along the petal rims, the sugary crystalline surface carrying a fine shimmer. The form rolls and drapes with no hard angles anywhere. Under the UV lamp (photographed), daylight pink gives way to a saturated, burning orange-red across the entire piece.

Calcite can imitate almost anything, and here it chose softness: petals and folds of pale pink stacked like whipped cream or turned silk, a mineral pretending to be cloth. Then the ultraviolet lamp comes on and the pretense drops — the whole piece ignites into ember orange-red, the softest object in the room suddenly its most incandescent.

Why collectors want this

Among fluorescent minerals, the drama is measured by the distance between the two states — and pale pink to ember orange-red is about as far as calcite travels. Add the cream-soft habit, rare in itself, and this is a collector-grade piece twice over: once by day, once by lamp.

Living with it

By day, soft diffuse light keeps the cream illusion intact. Keep a small UV lamp within reach — the transformation is this piece's evening performance. The thin petal rims are fragile: no contact, soft blower only, position clear of traffic. Keep dry.
