Visual description

Semi-translucent cubes in grey-blue to grey-green build the form, their edges sharp and cleanly defined. Patches of a cream-to-tan micro-crystalline coating drape parts of the surface like moss on stone, softening the geometry and adding an earthen counterpoint to the cool glassy cubes.

The Huanggang mine in Inner Mongolia has become one of the defining fluorite localities of the past two decades, known for crisp cubic crystals in cool, glassy tones. This upright cluster is a classic of the type: a small mountain of stacked cubes, self-supported without matrix.

Why collectors want this

Freestanding cubic clusters with this degree of edge definition photograph well but reward in-person viewing more: the interplay between transparent crystal interiors and the matte coating shifts as you move around the piece.

Living with it

Stable on its acrylic base; avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can fade fluorite's color over time. A cool-white light source deepens the blue-green tones.
