From across the room this teardrop plate reads as one black stone. Step closer and it splits in two: epidote columns that glow olive to deep green under light, glassy and translucent at their edges — and schorl prisms that stay absolutely, unreflectively black. Between the woven columns, small silvery-white quartz patches catch and scatter the light.
Two dark minerals grew here in the same moment, in the same space, and refused to yield to each other: deep-green epidote columns and jet-black schorl tourmaline prisms, interlocked like a tightly bound bundle of branches. Quartz filled the gaps between them with flecks of silver-white light.
Why collectors want this
The piece is a game of telling two blacks apart — one that transmits light and one that swallows it, each keeping its own crystal form while threading through the other. The woven, crosshatched texture of the columns rewards close viewing from every angle.
Living with it
Side lighting is essential: it separates the glassy green of the epidote from the matte black of the tourmaline. Both minerals are reasonably hard, but the projecting column tips deserve care — lift by the base only.
