Visual description

The fluorite skeleton runs cool grey-green, semi-translucent. Over it the calcite "rime" settles densest along the crystal edges, veiling the green into frost-haze; several larger milky calcite crystals sit embedded among the frost like snowbanks. A small patch of dark matrix shows at the summit. The whole reads as a green mountain crossed by a snowline.

Xianghualing is one of the storied names of Chinese mineralogy — a locality collectors say it with respect. From it comes this upright mountain of grey-green fluorite cubes, over which a final generation of white calcite crystallized along every edge and face: the mineral equivalent of freezing rain on a forest, every branch left carrying its ice.

Why collectors want this

Two carbonate-and-halide generations, one weather event frozen in mineral: the rime texture is the rarity here, an all-over atmosphere rather than a single showpiece crystal. And the Xianghualing name carries its own weight on a specimen label.

Living with it

Cool-white light from the front upper angle keeps the frost reading as frost; warm light melts the illusion. The rime layer is the fragile part — no contact, soft blower only, and a position clear of passing traffic.
