The base runs brown-grey but is anything but flat: countless tiny crystal faces glitter across it like abrasive grit on wet sand, with ochre-to-orange iron staining and a thin yellow band adding warmth. White hydrozincite rosettes — matte, faintly waxy — cluster densely along the upper edge and scatter downslope. Several natural perforations pierce the shelf.
By day this is a quiet piece: a reef-like shelf of glittering siderite, dusted with dolomite, stained here and there with iron warmth — and scattered across it, white hydrozincite blossoms like snow that refused to melt. Then the ultraviolet lamp comes on, and the blossoms answer with light of their own.
Why collectors want this
It is two specimens on one shelf: the daylight piece, all texture and quiet contrast — and the UV piece, when the white blossoms ignite under the lamp (seller-verified, photographed). Fluorescent minerals reward owners nightly; few do it from a form this sculptural.
Living with it
Position it where a small UV lamp can reach it after dark — the transformation is the ritual. By day, low raking light makes the glittering base and the white blossoms trade emphasis. Keep dry; carbonate-rich pieces dislike prolonged moisture.
