Visual description

The fluorite core reads celadon — blue leaning green, finely matte, its softness genuine to the crystal surface itself. Semi-translucent calcite petals with rounded edges cloak the top and flanks, their rims catching light brightly, while the blue shows through the gaps in broad windows. The two colors serve each other as figure and ground: white defines the blue; blue warms the white.

Two minerals divided the work here with unusual intimacy. Fluorite made the heart: a core of celadon blue-green, its surface naturally matte, like glaze before the kiln's final gloss. Calcite made the covering: ivory petals wrapping the core from above and around, the way snow settles over a frozen lake and leaves the ice showing through.

Why collectors want this

Most combination specimens are decoration — one mineral dotted on another. This is envelopment: a complete wrapping structure, rare in the type, and a palette that speaks the language of celadon glaze — East Asian in register, at home in any quiet interior. It photographs softly and rewards close viewing more.

Living with it

Soft, slightly cool light preserves the celadon register; hard warm light pushes the blue toward grey. Orient the largest blue window toward the viewer. The calcite petal rims are the fragile part — no contact, soft blower only. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight.
